Each of us has dreams, and it doesn’t matter whether they are modest or full of momentum. The ground is to see the uniqueness of our fantasy and to strive to fulfill it. And if I offered you a game where the stake would be in making your hidden dream come true? Tell me – would you take up the challenge? Actually, you have nothing to lose, after all, it’s just a simple game. Unpredictable, magical, peculiar, but still playing.
Scarlett and Tella are sisters who have spent their entire lives on a small island. They do not lead a happy life, and this is mainly because of the apodictic father of the tyrant, for whom even the slightest guilt is an excuse for punishment. The sisters are their opposites – the younger Tella will do everything she can to free herself from her father’s power. No matter what the consequences of his actions are, he takes every decision too hastily. Scarlett, on the other hand, is restrained and guided by reason. The news that her father has arranged a wedding for her is an ideal gap for freedom.
As little girls, sisters with baked goods on their faces listened to stories about Caravalu, an annual game where the prize is the fulfillment of a dream. Unexpectedly luck knocks on their door and they become guests of honour of the master of the ceremony, the mysterious legend. Scarlett wants to make childhood fantasies a reality, but on the other hand she doesn’t want to run the risk and fall under her father’s feet, so she resigns from the ceremony. As they say, happiness must be helped. The younger Tella takes things into her own hands and, with the help of an eccentric sailor, tends to persuade her sister to take part in the game by trickery. It soon turns out that Tella is being abducted and that finding her becomes an object of the game.
The future is like the past. Usually it has a fixed course, but you can always influence it…
Imagine a map that lives its life and changes the location of random cities – what used to be in the north, now is in the south. You don’t know which way to go, you feel dismayed and every attempt to escape leads you to the same place. Your senses start to play tricks on you, you don’t know whether it’s reality or illusion. Or maybe madness? This is how the plot of the novel is shaped. The magic penetrates into the bone marrow, the planes of realism go into the background, you become a part of the game. A group of tips, puzzles and spells await you. You must have your eyes wide open, you must remember not to be deceived by appearances. Here time flows much faster, blood makes miracles, and the currency is secrets, desires and fear. You will reach a new dimension of nervousness, because you will be greedy to learn more about what’s going on. The turns of action give the book phenomenal dynamism, and the plot is constantly changing. What seems obvious is not at all the case. If you think that all the cards have been discovered, it will be impossible – the world will turn upside down.
You will get to know the main character, who is a bit infantile and clumsy, although you will immediately notice her fortitude, tenderness and delicacy. You will stand next to her and you will see that she is still coming back to past events, but she is trying to learn from her mistakes. Unfortunately, sometimes it will cause you irritation and even a desire for murder. You will turn your head and notice a handsome, resolute man. You don’t really know what his intentions are, but you still trust him. Did you make a good decision? You will find out everything in your time… You have to remember that Caraval is just a game, and everything you believe in can turn out to be a mirage. The game will reveal to you the most hidden desires of the participants, you will learn what they are most afraid of and what are the consequences of fear. Every character you encounter on your way will be enchanted by his originality, courage, sometimes criticality or grotesque. When you look at them from a distance, you will know that the author has sketched them out.
The fairy-tale atmosphere gives the novel its unique charm. Through the colourful language of Stephanie Garber, you will see things you haven’t even dreamt of, your senses will be hypnotized and your imagination will discover new levels of ingenuity and creativity, after all, it’s not so easy to imagine the “pale blue curiosity about the vibrant senses”, right? Similar metaphors will revolve around you like the Earth around the Sun.
(…) some things are worth getting, regardless of the cost.
