Hair oiling is a hair care method that has been known for centuries by Asians and residents of the Middle East. In our country, the fashion for oiling hair appeared quite recently, but immediately conquered the hearts of women dreaming of healthy, soft and shiny hair. It’s no wonder, however – regular hair oiling significantly improves the quality of your hair. You need to spend some time on this, but the effects – more flexible, shiny and smooth hair – are worth it as much as possible.
No oiling for greasy hair?
Hair oiling is ideal for dry, brittle, dull, damaged and split ends. It is not true, however, that the hair oiling treatment is not intended for normal hair owners or those with a tendency to grease their hair. Choosing the right hair oil can make it possible to oil your hair a lot more.
Hair oiling – which oil to choose?
To find the right oil for your hair you just need to… experiment ? It means to use it for a while, applying it about 3 times a week and if it works well with your hair, continue the treatment. On the other hand, frizzy, heavy or rough to the touch hair will be a sign that the oil is not suitable for our hair and needs to be replaced. Most often, it is only after many months of testing that it is possible to determine whether a given oil is good for the hair. This does not mean that we will be able to use this “right” oil without any problems at all times. Over time, the quality of our hair will change, and so will its demand for specific nutrients, which will require a change in the oil used for another one or the use of several types of alternating oils.
What kind of hair oil?
It is best to use oils that are as natural, unrefined and cold pressed as possible for the hair oiling treatment. These can be both cosmetic and food oils, however, before buying a specific product it is worth to carefully analyse the composition and make sure that there are no chemical additives in it. But to the point of ? Here is a list of the most popular hair oils and their properties.
How do I oil my hair? Hair oiling methods
The most common and simple method of oiling hair is dry oiling on unwashed hair. The oil is applied on the entire length of the hair and on the scalp surface and is left for about 45 minutes. However, it turns out that a much better way to oil your hair is to apply oils to damp hair and clean scalp – in such conditions oils spread better on your hair and their valuable ingredients penetrate more effectively the structure of your hair.
However, the individual issue is the time of holding the oils on the hair – a minimum of 30 minutes, but when it comes to the maximum time, it already depends on our individual preferences and the effect that we want to achieve. If your hair needs deep nourishment, you can keep the oil on your head for a few hours or even overnight. It also depends on us whether the oil is applied to half of the hair, to the ends of the hair or to the scalp. It is important, however, that you apply the oil and apply a plastic cap and a towel to your hair – the heat makes the oils work even harder! If you want to improve your hair’s condition in a visible and long-term way, repeat the treatment at least once a week, but not more often than three times a week, so as not to “over-glue” your hair. It is worth observing your hair during the treatment – check to see to what extent it absorbs oil and how it “feels” after the treatment. On the basis of this information we will be able to adjust the frequency of treatment ideal for us and the way of oil application.
Oiling and colouring of hair
Remember that oiling your hair does not always go hand-in-hand with colouring. Oiling, although for various reasons very beneficial for the hair, can block the scalp of the hair, which will not be able to absorb the dyeing mixture, which can affect the intensity of coloring. The greatest risk occurs with bleached hair, which may turn yellow after a few washes. That is why it is worth limiting oiling of hair before the planned colouring, and also informing the hairdresser about the treatments carried out. One should also remember about proper care of oiled hair – first of all about avoiding products that contain a lot of silicones, and also about using a conditioner after each hair wash.
